International Wolf Center and Ely

Malik and Shadow, Arctic subspecies of gray wolves, were born on May 8, 2000. Malik was the lowest-ranking male in the Exhibit Pack. When the aggression from Grizzer, the second-ranking male, became too intense for Malik’s physical safety, he was retired in September 2009. Shadow was retired in June 2010 after showing signs of aging that led to challenges from younger wolves. The camera focuses on the den area, the main feature of the retirement area. You may see Malik or Shadow actively running along the fence line in response to the Exhibit Pack’s activities. The packs still communicate by howling and have a small fenced area where they can see each other without direct contact.
